Designing scaffolding with BIM: discover the advantages of the Building Information Modelling
By now, the acronym BIM is becoming increasingly present in the dictionary of any professional in construction. Let's find out what it means to us and what application it finds in the scaffolding design.
What is BIM
BIM (Building InformationModelling) has become one of the most used acronyms when it comes to building, but what is it really? The BIM is a process methodology that allows the creation of digital project simulations, aimed at optimising the different states of the entire life cycle of a building.

Ultimately, the goal is to generate a virtual model with information about the building itself, harmoniously managing any and all information associated with an architectural project. One of the main advantages of this process is to develop the multidisciplinary project, which all involved actors can easily participate to, with a correct process and adequate management, significantly reducing the percentage of errors, time and costs.

Reading thus far, somebody might think it's still a long way until BIM becomes mandatory. Well, it's not quite like that. As of 1st December 2017, the BIM Baratono decreeestablished a gradual adoption of the BIM as of 1st January 2019.

The BIM is here and the challenge to be in line with this process is the same for everyone: professionals, companies, suppliers and generally, anyone involved in the in the building industry.
BIM and scaffolding design
Scaffolding systems, as part of the category of temporary structures, play an important role on any job site. Sadly, every year around the globe, injuries occur sometimes with subsequent white deaths caused by accidents due to falling from a height, linked to the scaffolding structure.
This is why the design of scaffolding is a delicate and fundamental phase of the entire design process and just couldn't be left out of the BIM process.
When we talk about BIM models we no longer refer to "simple" 3D drawings, but to the possibility of creating parametric objects. Precisely, it is the information that represents that extra plus making this process standing out. What defines the object really is the information that can be set up into its configuration.
An accurate definition of scaffolding design through the BIM will avoid material waste, time and consequently costs, working in a coordinated manner with professionals from other sectors in the development of the project.
